Great book for entrepreneurs

The Truth about You is a toolkit of easy to use experiential materials. Don't ever think it is just a regular sort of book to make you think about self improvement.

A lot of people I work with in direct sales are very high energy starters who are much more interested in seeing people than sitting down to read a 200 page self help book. This is a great tool for them. You start with a short DVD that is a very powerful demonstration of the core message of The Truth about You. That is, we are better off spending our time working from our strengths and our passions than trying to fix what's wrong. With the voiceover narrative from Buckingham, it's highly entertaining. I can't imagine anyone watching this and not realizing a core truth for themselves about how much better it would feel to work from your strengths. (I admit it--I've watched the DVD twice.)

After you watch the DVD, read the book. The book picks up where the movie ends, and is an easy to read set of extensions in basic advice and examples for you to look at yourself. The third part of the package is a ReMemo pad to carry around to document the places in your life that are draining (focus on your weaknesses) and the places that come from your core strengths. The ReMemo Pad is small enough to carry in a pocket or purse and is the application of the book to you. It completes the task of revealing your strengths in everyday activities.

For people who are not "book people," The Truth about You is an ideal opportunity to unlock those things you love about yourself. It's fun, entertaining, and easy to complete.

I like Marcus Buckingham and am already familiar with his work. If that describes you too, then The Truth About You is a great refresher of the traditional Buckingham material. If you're new to his stuff, I would start with the meatier Now Discover Your Strengths.

The Truth About You outlines 5 pieces of career advice that are counterintuitive and originally presented. I welcome Buckingham's candid advice for readers to take control of structuring their own day to day jobs and long-term careers -- to identify what they like to do, to identify what companies value (and therefore what you'll be paid to do), to pay attention over the long-term so that you continue doing what you like.

The book is so breezy that it takes just an hour or so to read. It has a companion DVD and special note paper which adds more heft. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as much had I not already read several of Buckingham's previous books. I found myself wanting more specific examples and instructions to put the advice into play. But all in all, these are great ideas and well worth the time it takes to read them. This would also be a great book club selection because the ideas lend temselves to open-ended discussion.

Every now and then I come across a really cool book. This is one of them.

he best part of it is that it gives you a whole different way of understanding strengths and weaknesses. Strengths are not necessarily those things you do well, and weaknesses are not necessarily those things you're not good at. Sometimes your biggest greatest weakness appears to be a strength.

For example, I am really good at organizing. I can come into a room, see what's out of place, and figure out how to organize that room into something that functions smoothly. I can also organize people, events, schedules, whatever. You can show me total chaos, and I will create order quickly, and set up a system for maintaining it.

However, I HATE to do it. When I look at a situation that needs that kind of management, I can feel myself actually "deflate". It takes real effort for me to dive in and do the work. I can delegate it well, or draw up a plan to have others do it, and that's fine, but to do it myself? Yikes. This is why my house isn't exactly a poster home for Martha Stewart.

There are other things that really light my fire - like knitting, believe it or not - that I'm really bad at. However, I love the rhythm of knitting, and the fact that you can see progress really quickly (well, others can. I take it out just as often as I knit it up).

The book shows you things you can do to avoid the areas of your weakness as much as possible, and live your life mostly in your strengths. It's written mostly to teenagers, but I got a lot out of it, and wish I had read it when I was MUCH younger. It comes with a DVD and a special notepad to help you get started.

Simple, Quick, Effective...

I love books that help me get better at anything, especially when they bring out a fresh new perspective that I need to hear. It also helps when they are presented in a way that helps to build the lesson into me rather than simply present the information. Such is Buckingham's work.

The whole kit comes with a book, 110 pages, a DVD that is integral to working with the book and a follow on notepad to use over the next few weeks in carrying out the observations and action plans described in the book. The book is snappy and light reading. Each concept has a "here's what you've heard, here's what you really need to do" feel to it. Then it has the instructions on what to do. My suggestion: do what it says.

There are several salient points in the work. Each person who follows the action plans will likely be affected differently. For me it was the idea that I needed to abandon the idea of being a "well rounded person" and get comfortable with my strengths. Then, lead with my strengths and get paid for that knowledge, experience and effectiveness.

I have the fortune of working in both the corporate environment and in the church. The thought of applying an action plan to what I do at church is a little scary. I may need an action plan to implement my action plan. I rate this one worth your time, especially if you are looking for a fresh, simple and effective way to get off center and on track to the success you hope to pursue.

Don't expect any startling advice

This is a thin book in a snappy package, combined with a DVD of the author speaking. He's charming and persuasive (undoubtedly a key to his success) - but the book is nothing new. I didn't garner really anything useful.

The main premise the author is to find out what your strengths are and play to those. This is great advice and the exercises in the book undoubtedly will help some find that.

The book is focused on your career, which is not bad, just not the only human dimension by which people might measure success. People should do rewarding work, and this kit may be helpful finding that. Like anything, to get value from this, you need to do the exercises.
