Great Devotional for Students

As a Student Ministry Pastor, we are using this book for our High School Summer Small Groups. It has been a great tool for students to get into God's truth daily. I previously did the adult version of this book on my own about four years ago. I really enjoyed it then. The book takes collections from all sorts of Max Lucados books and organizes them into a Daily Devotional. Each week has 5 devotionals and a memory verse to work on, ten weeks total. There are breaks between Max Lucado's writings to look up several scripture passages and lines to write down your own reflections. Sometimes there will be places to do some verse matching with which truth it teaches. All just to get students into the Word. The students have all enjoyed these devotionals, and even our leaders are doing them and appreciating them.
The down side is that this is almost the same book as the adult book. Max has changed some examples to make them student friendly and that is good. But, some examples are dated. Like the one I read today, where Max goes on a jog with a walkman and has to decide what "tape" to bring. The fonts, the cover, and the lay out are more student friendly. Some of the weaknesses of the adult book are here too. Some of the verses are difficult to match with the truth Lucado has chosen. After awhile, Max's style got old. I suppose 10 weeks is a long time. But, I found myself wanting more deeper stuff and less story and fluff. Max is great at the story and the "fluff" but I enjoy some more challenging reads.
Overall, I think this is an effective Devotional and I would recommend it to other pastors thinking of doing this for High School students. I wouldn't recommend it for too much younger since each day requires 20-30 minutes and and the examples seem to be about HS stuff (driving, dating, etc.) and I wouldn't go any older than high school.
