Begging Experts to Write a Decent Bible for 3ds Max
Rating (2)
Date: 2009-07-22
I have worked with 3ds Max for over 10 years now, and in all that time I have never found a decent "bible" that covers more than a scant tidbit of information on any given topic. This particular version by Kelly Murdock is just as frustrating to use and disappointing as every other version on the market.
3ds Max is a richly woven environment containing a plethora of options for animators; whole bibles could be written on any one of the many functions of this software. That being said, I do understand that a more in-depth bible would most likely be twice as fat (its roughly 3 inches now) with half the size font this particular book already sports. However, and as an example, information like this (re: adding sound to an animation via the Open Sound dialog box) helps few:
[page 843]: "..Although it can't be edited in Max, the sound file can be shifted left or right to change its starting point." That's nice... how about a tiny hint of how that's done? Anyone?? The track view curve editor has no indication of a tool or source which would allow a sound track to be "shifted left or right." 3ds Max help offers no information. The Internet offers no information... even Autodesk - the creator of this software - offers no explanation as to how this action is possible. You load the sound file and it automatically starts at zero, with no intuitive way of adjusting that starting point. A book such as this should at the very least back up the statement, "...the sound file can be shifted left or right..." with an example of how to do it. Just one example of the many, many examples I could pull from this book, and just my most recent frustration.
As I stated, I realize this book would be much thicker, much heavier and the print would be much tinier to include details about all the options this software provides, but simple, unexplained things as exampled above are frequently found throughout this particular version of the 3ds Max Bible.
In summary, I would not recommend this book to a beginner as a reference, as it is difficult to use if you do not have the terminology set in stone; also, with the frequent disregard for explanation, this book is frustrating as a resource for the experienced.

It is a good book but it doesn't go into depth into some of the tasks and challanges I had to face. But overall it was a good instructional book.

This book is what I was looking for to get started and to be able to use most, if not all, of the 3D MAX features.

I do not like most bible based books but this one is very good. It gives several examples and gives very good definitions. I would recommend it as a reference to anyone.
