Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Search and rescue dogs are invaluable members of certified rescue teams designated to locate accident victims and lost adults and children in wilderness areas and at disaster scenes. This book presents advice and guidance for rescue dog handlers, with information on how dogs scent, and detailed instruction on training of both dogs and their handlers. The author discusses rescue specialties where dogs are a critical resource in specific circumstances that include avalanche rescue, locating drowning victims, and locating both the living and the dead in the wake of plane crashes, earthquakes, and other calamities. The text is supplemented with color photos and helpful line art.

Very Good Basic Book

This is a very good basic book for training search and rescue dogs. It is written in simple language, tons of illustrations and explains allot of questions that new SAR Canine Handlers would have. I plan on making it required reading for new handlers on our SAR team. It is also not biased towards one SAR skill set or dog breed as so many books of this type are. I recommend this Book for any newer SAR Canine Handler. KT Baker, Canine Coordinator Bluegrass Search and Rescue, Georgetown KY

This may be a good book for someone who really knows nothing. It will get you started in everything you need to know about SAR skills, handler qualities, the right dog... but as for training, I was half way through the book before I actually got to some training information. The author is too long winded. The book is incredibly detailed, almost too much so for me. I ended up skipping a lot of stuff. Like I said; it may be good for someone who really needs to know everything, but I bet it would be a bit too much.

An interesting and thorough review of training and some of the history of search and rescue. Any of the tracking and SAR activities are always fun for the dogs as it is their turn to tell us what to do. It also is a good way to get involved in community service activities.

I have purchased several search and rescue books to guide my training, but this book was used the most during the initial trainings of my Alsatian Shepalute, Citara. I found it VERY helpful in getting my 8 week pup from curious, to knowledgeable about scent. I only wish this author would write a book for the handler to learn about GPS, human tracking, etc., that one must learn to become certified. Easy to read, easy to understand and accomplish tasks. I thoroughly enjoyed it and refer to it often.
