Product Description

Dr. Smalley's exhaustive commentary on the Greek text of the letters of John argues that they, together with the Fourth Gospel, record and reflect the spiritual history of the Johannine community itself. These letters contain theological, ethical and practical truths that are fundamental to the Christian position in every age: that Jesus is one with God as well as one with us; that love and righteousness are indispensable to the believer who seeks as a child of God to walk in the light; and that unity, however flexible, is a demand laid upon the whole Church at all times.

This revision of the author's original 1984 commentary is a complete update. Dr. Smalley has revised the text, references, and bibliography to reflect advances in Johannine scholarship.

The Word Biblical Commentary is a good commentary if you are looking for a technical commentary. It could be more technical (meaning that more verbs should be analyzed that they are), but there is alot of help when it comes to exegesis. If you need a commentary for a Greek class that exegetes 1, 2, or 3 John, I would defininitely recommend this commentary. It's right up your alley.
If you know some Greek and want a good commentary, I would still recommend, but I caution you that some things may be over your head. The good thing about this commentary is that when he quotes a Greek clause, the English translation will either precede or follow the Greek. This is a big plus for both the commentary and the lay Greek student.
I would recommend this book to just about anyone who wants to understand the passage verse by verse and clause by clause.

not as good as most WBC volumes

The author bases his commentary on the assumption that a single person did not write 1-3 John but rather a "Johannine community," and unfortunately that assumption permeates the whole commentary. Many modern critical scholars think that these epistles were written by a single author, even those who deny it to be John the apostle. WBC has many good commentaries, but this is not one of them. This commentary is merely one scholar flirting with certain ideas he has about Johannine literature that are not based on any solid evidence. Other aspects of the commentary, such as the structure of 1 John, are also quite weak.

For a much better commentary on 1-3 John, read Yarbrough's BECNT commentary on 1-3 John.
